From layout to fit-in / レイアウトからフィットインの時代へ

Though this is my personal feeling from my recent event, the transition from a Mac to an iPad for creative scene, I cannot help but believe the end of “layout” age.

In the “layout” age, everything was, and should have been, laid out. For example, books, newspapers, magazines, and web pages were considered good if they were in beautiful layout. Paperbacks in western world (Europe, US) are exceptions, there are no layout there.

The recent spread of smart phones like iPhone, and tablet devices like iPad, seems changing the world into “fit-in” age from the “layout” age. You may not want to read regular (A4 or letter-sized) PDF with such devices, but may want to read some sophisticated version of it. The ePub, a standard format for electronic publishing, and AZW, the format of Amazon’s Kindle devices, are based on HTML and just fit into any devices, and good enough for replacing paperbacks because “layout” is not necessary in the paperbacks.

I personally feel that this “fit-in” culture, that is opposite to “layout” culture, will be a main stream and will kill the “layout” culture sooner or later. Keitai novels (novels specially designed for Japanese smart phones and written *by using* the smart phones) dramatically proves this transition. This would be the first time that metaphysics overcome physics on this planet.

個人的な経験で恐縮だが，最近愛用していた MacBook Air が故障したため，ある程度のクリエイティブワークにもiPadを使うようになった．その経験から，感じたことを述べてみたい．というのは，レイアウトの時代はやがて終わり，フィットインの時代が来るのではないかという直感があるからだ．

レイアウトの時代には，美しくレイアウトされることが全てだった．書籍，新聞（日本の新聞は駄目だ），雑誌，ウェブページは美しくレイアウトされていることが，評価の対象だった．例外は欧米のペーパバックで，これらはレイアウトが全くない．

最近のスマートフォンやガラケー，タブレットコンピュータの普及を見ていると，世界が変わりつつあるように思う．誰もA4サイズのPDFをケータイやタブレットで読みたいとは思わないだろう．欧米電子書籍の標準フォーマットePubやアマゾンのAZWは，欧米のペーパバックにレイアウトが存在しない点をうまく利用して，リフローを実現している．本邦の文庫本は欧米のペーパバックに比べてレイアウトがしっかりしているので，すぐに置き換わらないだろうが．携帯小説の台頭はこの流れを変える可能性を持っている．

地球上で初めて，形而上表現が形而下表現にとってかわる日が近いのかもしれない．
